What Is Seaweed Packaging?
Seaweed packaging is an innovative, seaweed-based alternative to conventional packaging, made using natural compounds and fibers derived from seaweed. These materials can be transformed into flexible films, bags, coatings, and edible gels, offering versatile solutions for different packaging needs. As an emerging alternative to petroleum-based plastics, seaweed bioplastic opens up new possibilities for sustainable packaging while helping reduce reliance on fossil-based materials.
Seaweed bioplastic offers transparent films for box windows and protective wraps.
Plastic from seaweed offers an alternative for retail and grocery bags.
Seaweed based packaging offers pouches for snacks, tea, and dry foods.
Sea weed packaging can form edible pods for drinks and sauces.
Product Feature
Overturning Tradition, Breakthrough Innovation – Five Stunning Benefits
A Versatile Plastic Alternative
Seaweed packaging can be made into films, coatings, paper, and flexible materials, offering alternatives to conventional plastics for a wide range of applications.
Rapidly Renewable
▶Seaweed grows and regenerates quickly, providing a renewable raw material with shorter harvest cycles than many land-based crops.
Biodegradable by Design
Natural seaweed polysaccharides can be used to develop biodegradable films and coatings, making seaweed based packaging a promising alternative to conventional plastics.
Regenerative by Nature
▶As it grows, seaweed absorbs CO₂ and excess nutrients, helping improve water quality and support healthy marine ecosystems.
Low-Resource Cultivation
Sea weed packaging can draw on ocean-farmed seaweed, which requires no agricultural land or freshwater irrigation and typically no fertilizers or pesticides.
Our Story
Why We Made It
Clear windows let shoppers see what's inside, which builds trust and lifts perceived value. But the plastic film behind them is almost impossible to recycle. So we developed a seaweed packaging solution with a transparent window that keeps the product visible, without conventional plastic film.
Materials
The window is certified 100% biobased, made entirely from seaweed and plant-based ingredients.
Seaweed Window
- Certified 100% biobased
- Home and industrial compostable
- Seaweed as the main ingredient
- 1–3 mil film thickness
Kraft Box
- 100% recycled, unbleached kraft board
- 85% post-consumer paper fiber
- 20pt board thickness
Scenarios
Made for retail shelves where seeing the product drives the sale. Shoppers can check the contents without opening the box, which means less handling damage and an easier shopping experience.

Comparison
Plastic vs. Seaweed Packaging
Explore the key differences between conventional plastic packaging and innovative seaweed based packaging.
| Key Factors | Plastic Packaging | Seaweed Packaging |
|---|---|---|
|
Raw Materials
|
Derived mainly from non-renewable fossil fuels. | Made with renewable seaweed-derived compounds or fibers. |
|
Renewability
|
Relies on finite fossil resources formed over millions of years. | Fast-growing seaweed can be harvested in short cultivation cycles. |
|
Resource Use
|
Requires fossil extraction and energy-intensive processing. | Seaweed cultivation needs no farmland or freshwater irrigation. |
|
Carbon Footprint
|
Fossil-based production contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. | May reduce fossil-based emissions; total impact depends on production. |
|
Biodegradability
|
Conventional plastics generally resist natural biodegradation. | Certain formulations are biodegradable or compostable under specific conditions. |
|
Microplastic Pollution
|
Can break down into persistent microplastic particles. | Verified plastic-free formulations avoid conventional plastic microplastics. |
|
Marine Ecosystem
|
Plastic pollution can harm marine life and habitats. | Seaweed cultivation can support water quality and marine habitats. |
Note: Seaweed-based packaging varies in composition and performance. Biodegradability, compostability, and environmental benefits depend on the specific formulation and disposal conditions.
Process & Applications
How Seaweed Becomes Packaging – Four Main Applications
Seaweed Harvesting
Seaweed is responsibly cultivated and harvested as the starting raw material.
Cleaning & Preparation
The harvested seaweed is washed, cleaned, and prepared for material processing.
Material Processing
Useful components such as polysaccharides or fibers are extracted, refined, or blended into usable packaging materials.
Film Forming & Extrusion
The material is processed into thin films through casting or extrusion.
Coating
Seaweed-based materials are applied as a coating on paperboard surfaces.
Seaweed Coating
Functional coated paper packaging for food containers and cartons.
Pulping & Papermaking
Seaweed fibers or by-products are mixed with paper fibers and formed into sheets.
Seaweed Paper
Printable paper for boxes, bags, and other paper-based packaging.
Gel Encapsulation
Seaweed-derived gels form soft edible membranes around liquids or foods.
Edible Seaweed Packaging
Edible capsules or membrane-style packaging for liquid and food applications.
